The MSc Epidemiology Postgraduate Online is our 90 ECTS programme. This part-time programme is offered online, which makes it flexible in time and place.

Theoretical epidemiological courses (34 ECTS)

All theoretical courses are offered online through Elevate Health.

Within the courses, 20 ECTS are core courses for all students, consisting of 8 basic epidemiology and statistical courses.
The other 14 ECTS are devoted to an individual programme of specialisation courses within:
- Clinical Epidemiology
- Veterinary Epidemiology or
- General Epidemiology 
These are advanced courses on MSc- or PhD-level in the field of epidemiology and statistics.
The individual programme depends on the epidemiological specialisation of choice and personal preferences. Courses are taught in the form of interactive lectures combined with computer exercises.

Research project (56 ECTS)

The research project is conducted within a research theme preferably at the location of the researcher and supervised by a supervisor of the Utrecht University. The research project is finished by an oral presentation and by writing a scientific paper, which is submitted to an international journal.

Specialisation programmes
Clinical Epidemiology

In clinical epidemiology, research is focused on questions of diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and etiology. To address these questions, several research options are available, including intervention trials and case-control studies using data obtained in a clinical setting.

Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases

The overall aim is to unravel mechanisms underlying the occurrence, evolution, spread and control of diseases in (farm) animal populations, and to develop and use quantitative methodological tools for that purpose. We aim to understand observed population phenomena from mechanistic insight into disease development at the level of individuals and the interactions both between these individuals and with their environment. We aim to identify risk factors and preventive factors for the spread or clinical manifestation of animal diseases acting at the primary production stages and to quantify their effects.

Medical Statistics

Medical Statistics aims to develop, teach and apply statistical methodology for the design and analysis of biomedical and biological research. The ultimate goal is to improve the positive impact of statistics on the health of people. 

Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology

With the prospect that innovative drug therapies will be introduced in the coming years, society demands new approaches and concepts for comparative risk/benefit evaluation. These evaluations are carried out once these therapies have been used widely in daily practice. Assessment of safety and risk management of different drug therapies is done in the framework of observational epidemiological studies (proof of 'safety', proof of 'effectiveness'). This is the logical next step after randomised clinical trials, which are designed to provide evidence of a drug's 'efficiancy'.

Pharmacoepidemiology

Veterinary Epidemiology

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University is the only veterinary faculty in the Netherlands and holds a leading position internationally in both education and research. Students specialising in this field will acquire extensive knowledge of epidemiology, statistics and economics, techniques in the economic analysis of epidemiological data, and the ability to apply theoretical epidemiological and health research concepts to practical veterinary medicine.
