Master Epidemiology

The research master programmes Epidemiology and Epidemiology Postgraduate are organised within the Utrecht University Graduate School of Life Sciences.

Epidemiology is a scientific discipline increasingly asked for in clinical (human, pharmaceutical or veterinary) research, industry and policymaking. With ‘evidence based medicine’ setting new standards, specialists are needed in design, data collection, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological and health research. The aim of the MSc Epidemiology programme is to provide students with extensive knowledge and practical skills in patient-oriented research design, implementation, quantitative analysis and its application to human or veterinary medicine and public health. The knowledge and skills gained form a solid basis for health research and disease control programmes, including application in developing countries.

The masters programme equals the registration demands for Epidemiologist A.

The master Epidemiology knows two variants:

Msc Epidemiology within Biomedical Sciences, a 2-year programme for students with a bachelor degree in Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or a degree from a university in or outside
the Netherlands comparable to the Dutch degrees indicated above.

Msc Epidemiology Postgraduate within Health Sciences, a shorter, 1.5-year programme for students with a master degree in Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or a degree from a university in or outside the Netherlands comparable to the Dutch degrees indicated above.

Within the Epidemiology programmes, six specialisations are offered:

Clinical Epidemiology Pharmacoepidemiology Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases
Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Veterinary Epidemiology  Medical Statistics

Each specialisation consists of a number of obligatory courses in which the details specific for that type of epidemiological research are taught in depth. In addition, students can choose advanced courses from outside their specialisation directions.

A research project is chosen in accordance with the direction of specialisation. Examples of research topics within the five specialisations are: the mathematical modelling of infectious diseases and relating health risks and economical consequences (veterinary epidemiology and epidemiology of infectious diseases), early detection and diagnosis of chronic disease (clinical epidemiology), effect of air pollution on mortality and morbidity (environmental and occupational epidemiology), and safety of different drug therapies (pharmacoepidemiology). Many more health related subjects concerning humans or animals may be the subject of study.
